We have all been there. We walk past someone on the streets or in a hall and say either “Oh I like that outfit” or “what are they wearing?” My biggest pet peeve is when someone judges someone based on what they wear. The amount of time I have been judged and have judged others for either what I was wearing or what others were wearing, we all could have put that energy into something better. This juggling of comparison is why people will never be confident in themselves.
Whatever it is that we say; someone on the other end is being judged for how they left the house that day. This is the biggest problem with fashion (and people who think they know what it is). People believe they are entitled to this elitist mentality; that they can dictate what is right and wrong. I believe that this is the absolute opposite of what fashion offers us. Fashion is meant to show who you are without verbally telling someone. Fashion is the ability to express your individuality and wear your heart on your sleeve. Fashion is not the snobby judgmental remarks you make in your head or out loud. This is a major reason why fashion has such a negative connotation.
Society is very judgmental. People always assume that what they see is what they get. If someone was wearing all black clothing heavy makeup on their face and piercings all over, we would all like to assume they are a horrible person. Sorry to break the news but most likely they are just the same as you and me. On the opposite end of the spectrum; someone who wears tailored suits or fine dresses 24/7 can be considered high maintenance and snobby. Maybe these assumptions are true, but most of the time they are wrong. The same people you judge are the same people who are great friends, amazing kids to their parents, and are trying to be who they want to be.
Let’s all make a conscious effort to embrace what others wear because that is the form of themselves, they want people to see.
